DEPARTMENT OF BIO-TECH

Established in 1965, the Biotechnology group has been an integral part of the college and has significantly contributed to its reputation as a leading institution for life sciences education in Vijayawada. The group was initiated under the visionary leadership of Late K. R. V. Subramanyam. Over the years, the group has been guided by several distinguished heads: Sri T. Satyanarayana (1988–1990), Sri P. Venkateswarlu (1990–2001), Sri G. V. Subbaiah (2001–2004), Dr. S. Sasikala (2004–2007), Sri S. Sambamurthy (2007–2010), and Smt. R. Lakshmi Kanthamma (2010–2012). At present, the Biotechnology group is headed by Ms. Ch. Radhika, with Dr. G. Ramesh serving as a dedicated faculty member.

The group has a built-up area of 391 sq. ft., including well-equipped laboratories. Several advanced laboratory instruments were procured through UGC grants released under various plan budgets. The management consistently supports the department by providing necessary funds to acquire modern and updated equipment as and when required. Since its inception, the group has also maintained a Biotechnology laboratory and specimen repository, supporting effective practical learning and research-oriented education.

VISION

To foster Biotechnology education as a scientific discipline that contributes to human well-being, technological advancement, and sustainable development.

MISSION

  • To apply both conventional and modern biotechnological tools to understand biological processes.
  • To develop skilled human resources with expertise in emerging and frontier areas of Biotechnology.
  • To encourage student participation in Eco-Natural and Biotechnology-related clubs to promote environmental and social responsibility.
  • To invite eminent subject experts for lectures and interactions, updating students and faculty with recent advancements in Biotechnology.

The built-up area of the department is 391 sq. mts., including well-equipped laboratories. Several advanced laboratory instruments were procured through UGC grants released under various plan budgets. The management has consistently provided necessary financial support to procure modern equipment as and when required. Since the inception of the department, a well-maintained Biotechnology laboratory and specimen repository has been in place to support effective teaching and practical training. The B.Sc. programmes with MBBC and BBC combinations were discontinued during 2009 and 2010 due to low student demand, as they were offered under the Self-Financing mode.

Objectives

  • To impart strong foundational and applied knowledge in Biotechnology and allied life science disciplines.
  • To engage students in extension, outreach, and community-oriented activities.
  • To create awareness about the nutritional value and biotechnological applications of food and bio-based products.
  • To promote awareness on environmental conservation and biodiversity through sustainable biotechnological practices.

Goals

  • To provide comprehensive knowledge in core and applied areas of Biotechnology.
  • To inculcate ethical, social, and humanitarian values through value-based education.
  • To actively involve students in extension activities, research exposure, and societal development programs.
  • To enhance awareness of nutrition, health, and food biotechnology for improved quality of life.
  • To foster responsibility towards environmental protection and biodiversity conservation using biotechnological approaches.
